Not so long ago, travelling meant planning around cash.
Whether for accommodation, dining, transportation, or shopping, travellers often found themselves carrying significant amounts of cash or searching for the nearest ATM upon arrival in a new city.
Across Nigeria, digital payments have become part of everyday life. From neighbourhood supermarkets to ride-hailing services and restaurants, many transactions that once required cash can now be completed in seconds using a card, bank transfer, or mobile payment.
For many travellers, cashless payments offer a level of convenience that aligns with the way people now live and travel. Reservations are made online, flights are booked through apps, and journeys are planned from a mobile phone. It is perhaps natural that payments during a stay have evolved in the same direction.

Cashless transactions are often quicker, reducing time spent at check-in and check-out. They provide a clear record of payments and can make expense management easier, particularly for business travellers who need to reconcile costs after a trip.
For international visitors, digital payments can also simplify arrival in a new destination. Rather than immediately seeking local currency, many travellers can use internationally accepted payment cards while they familiarise themselves with their surroundings and make arrangements at their own pace.
Security is another consideration. While cash remains an important payment method for many people, carrying large amounts while travelling is not always ideal. Electronic payments provide an alternative that many guests find more convenient and easier to manage.

As payment habits continue to evolve, businesses across many sectors are adapting to meet changing customer expectations. The hospitality sector is increasingly embracing systems that prioritise efficiency, security, and ease of use.
Reflecting this wider trend, Yanna Apartments by Khaliques transitioned to a cash-free operation from 1 June 2026. Guests are able to make payments using approved digital payment methods, bank transfers, and payment cards (including International cards), in line with the growing preference for cashless transactions across Nigeria.
While cash may always have a place in the economy, there is little doubt that the way people pay is changing. For travellers, that change often means one less thing to think about and one more opportunity to focus on the purpose of the journey itself.
